Stitching Tiny Comforts from Scraps 🧵✂️

This week, I shared a video on my YouTube channel that’s very close to my heart – a slow, gentle DIY using fabric scraps to create a tiny comfort doll, inspired by the traditional worry dolls of Guatemala.

Worry dolls come from Mayan folklore. Children would whisper their worries to these little handmade figures and tuck them under their pillows at night, trusting the doll to hold those feelings while they slept. I’ve always loved this idea – something so simple, yet so meaningful.

In this tutorial, I share my own take on the concept: a scrap fabric pocket doll that honours the spirit of comfort, creativity, and emotional expression, paired with a tiny handmade bed pouch.

You can use your finished doll in different ways:

As a worry doll – to share your worries at the end of the day

As a comfort doll – something to hold when you need support or protection

As a gratitude doll – a little companion to help you focus on what you’re thankful for

It’s a beautiful, calming project that invites you to slow down and create something small and meaningful – either for yourself, as a gift, or with a child (I recommend this project for ages 5+ with supervision, as it includes small parts and sewing).

🧵 In the video, I guide you through each step, from making the doll’s body, stitching the tiniest face, to sewing a mini bed to keep it safe.

If you have some time, I’d love for you to join me in making your own.

Here are the materials you’ll need:

Try to use what you already have! Here’s a rough guide to help you gather supplies:

  • Scrap fabrics (I used scrap fabrics for the clothing and bed, and old stocking/pantyhose material for the head and body)

  • Embroidery thread

  • Sewing thread and needles

  • Glue (PVA, fabric glue or hot glue)

  • Scrap paper (newspaper or any recycled paper)

  • Pins, scissors

  • Stuffing (hobby fill, wool, or tiny fabric scraps)

  • Craft wire (optional – for flexible arms)

🛏️ The finished doll is approx. 6cm tall and includes a tiny bed pouch for safekeeping.
