From Quilt Cover to Men's Shirt 👕

This week I tried something a little different – I made a men’s shirt from an old duvet cover (or ‘doona cover’ if you’re here in Australia 😉). I’ve had this 2000s sea-themed cover tucked away for a while – found it second-hand at Savers and knew I’d eventually cut into it for something wearable.
I used the Finch Button Up Shirt pattern by Common Stitch, and made a few simple adjustments:
– Lengthened the shirt
– Straightened the hem
– Narrowed the sleeves slightly
It felt good to make use of what I already had on hand – sustainable, satisfying, and a reminder that there’s a lot of potential in materials we might otherwise overlook.
Also… my husband, Lorenz, makes a special guest appearance in this video as the reluctant (but very helpful) model. Whether or not he’ll actually wear the shirt is another story – but he was a good sport, and I do think it suits him.
If you enjoy sewing, upcycling, or just seeing fabric transformed into something new, come watch and let me know what you think!
Next week, I’ll be sharing a DIY quilted zipper pouch tutorial. Stay tuned if you’d like to find ways to use up your fabric scraps or try something new!
